Our Store/Aviary
We keep and breed Lady Gouldians, Blue Capped Cordon Bleus, Societies (Bengalese), and Swees (Yellow Bellied waxbills).
Our finches are housed in walk-in flights (one pair per flight) when breeding to ensure accuracy in tracking the offspring. Each breeding flight is outfitted with several manzanita and Sandy perches, a variety of nests and nesting materials, and artificial foliage (for privacy as well as additional perches). We use oil absorbent clay as the substrate in all flights due to it's highly absorbent (eliminates moisture) and non-toxic properties. All flights are lit with a full spectrum light set on a timer to mimic the birds' natural day/night cycle. Our birds also are trained to use a "Water Buddy" (water dishes are provided for bathing) -- for a more hygenic means of providing drinking water to the birds. Our aviary room is equipped with a Hunter Hepa air filtration system with ionic air purifier for good air quality, and temperature and humidity are controlled. We allow the temperature to fluctuate between 68 and 80 degrees and keep humidity between 35 and 40 percent in the room. The aviary also has two large windows that face north and south, so the birds receive a good source of direct sunlight (and moon light) as well as fresh air.
When our birds are not breeding, pairs are separated by sex and housed in one of our larger walk-in flights. Weaned juveniles also are housed in one of the larger walk-in flights until they are sold. This helps to ensure that all of our birds get plenty of rest and room to exercise while minimizing potential aggression. The larger walk-in flights are only equipped with manzanita and Sandy perches to provide plenty of perch space while maximizing flight space. We also provide a heat lamp next to a perch in the larger flights in case a moulting bird wants extra heat.
All of the offspring our finches produce are color banded for family designation. For some types, we use split colored bands to distinguish between males and females. We are able to provide genetic records for all of the offspring our birds produce.
After several years of trial and error, we developed our own mix of seed -- Premium Finch Blend -- that birds LOVE! Last year, we added Morning Bird's Miracle Meal and Twin Beaks Aviary's Herb Salad™ to our Premium Finch Blend and created "Miracle Herb Seed." Finches absolutely devour the Miracle Herb Seed like it's their last meal!!
To provide a well-balanced diet, we also provide our "Convenience Mix" (a mixture of powdered oyster shell or cuttlebone, fine ground charcoal, and Morning Bird's Powdered Kelp and Trace Minerals Powder), Palm Oil Meal, and eggshell daily. Fresh eggfood is offered daily and fresh vegetables are offered once a week. See our "Finch Info and Articles" page for our eggfood recipe! Roasted mealworms and California Golden Spray Millet™ are offered daily to breeding pairs, and spray millet is offered once a week as a treat to non-breeding birds.
The bird care products we offer for sale are those that we use in our avian maintenance and breeding program. We believe in these products because of the results they have produced in the overall health, vitality and color intensity of our birds.
