A common ailment during breeding season is eggbinding in hens. According to many experts, the main cause for eggbinding is due to a lack of vitamin A and essential fatty acids. The vitamin A and essential fatty acids deficiency is second only to protein deficiency in domesticated birds according to some experts.
In order for a hen to lay an egg, the oviduct must be both flexible and lubricated in order for a fully formed egg to pass through it. Two nutrients are primarily responsible for this oviduct flexibility and lubrication: the vital oils -- called essential fatty acids -- which are found only in fats and oils, are built into each cell and make the cell wall flexible; and vitamin A, which keeps the mucous membranes within the oviduct moist and healthy. A lack of either of these two vital nutrients will result in a poorly formed and inflexible oviduct. The result is eggbinding.
Palm oil is an excellent source of essential fatty acids as well as vitamins A, E, K, and magnesium (according to reports from the Palm Oil Industry Council). Insects also contain vitamin A as well as protein. Palm Oil Meal not only contains palm oil that provides the essential fatty acids and vitamins that birds need, the insect flavored Palm Oil Meal also contains protein and vitamin A from insects.
